Capri is avery popular day trip but it's great staying there, especially after in the evening after all the day trippers have gone. We stayed at the Caesar Augustus hotel for our 25th anniversary. Lovely hotel perched on the cliff top but our time slightly spoiled by having David Mellor and David Davies from FA staying at the same time.

Ischia is as nice as Capri and with better beaches but much cheaper.

I stayed here when in Capri, very reasonable and a lovely pool. He doesnt do bookings online so you have to contact him or turn up

Just came back from Amalfi

Amalfi - quiet organic, up market

Capri - busy, touristy and pricey feel like I got done by the cabbies

Sorrento - More busy and few bars and clubs

If you stay somewhere stay here!

Make sure you stop at Positano, it's better than Sorrento in my opinion. Amalfi was ok, more of a market town though

Lovely part of the world. Capri is a nice day trip, but very expensive. To get around the island you need to get buses which are infrequent and only hold about 10 people!

Best way to get to Pompeii from Sorrento is by train...takes about 45 minutes and compared to UK is very cheap. Pompeii itself is amazing and covers a huge site. Lots of amazing sights there, including a Roman brothel with a knob painted on the wall outside, and portraits of the most popular prostitutes still visible in the rooms inside!

Re: Sorrento/Capri
We went to Bar Fauno which was a decent place right in the centre of the Piazza Tasso which is Sorrento's main square. It's more expensive but a great place to people watch.

Over the road is a smaller place called Bar Erculo (i think) which is cheaper and just as good a spot.

The bars tend to shut at 2am but we were in Bar Fauno twice till well after 3, they're not in a hurry to get rid of you.

Hadn't seen it posted earlier, but the blue grotto is complete waste of time and money. Personally, I thought Capri as a whole was well overrated. I didn't have a bad meal in sorrento and pompeii is fantastic.

Stopped off in Naples, Capri, blue grotto in the early 70s on the Canberra. Could see mount Edna erupting as we passed.

Never made it up Pompei!

Spent 5 days in Positano last month - brilliant place. I'd recommend visiting there rather than Amalfi, Ravello or any of the other towns on the coast. It's the nearest to Sorrento as well.

Re: Sorrento/Capri
Fabulous place.

There are some good coach tours that take you to Positano, Ravello, etc. for the day and stopping for a while in each place to do your own thing for a while.(Best tip I was given - If you go on one, sit on the right hand side of the coach, otherwise you're just looking at a rock wall the whole way and miss most of the fantastic scenery).

Capri - Make sure you go up to Ana Capri, the bit you get dropped off in is just a tourist trap with Gucci/Armani etc. shops with stupid prices.

Pompeii is a 'must do' but avoid the organised tours, it's easy enough to walk around at your own speed and all the info you need is there and in the book you get when you go in.

Don't bother schlepping up Vesuvius, it looks better from further away.

I'm off there for 10 days in July, and just reading the comments by you lot is very promising.

I went to the capo in about 1986 seen it in brochures lovely hotel service restaurant etc

Nearly got pick pocketed but felt the twats hand on my leg he moved away sharpish and got off the bus. People sitting down must have seen what he was doing but didn't say anything.

Pompeii is special

Re: Sorrento/Capri
Sorry for hijacking, but...we're driving down there mid June as part of a fortnight's trek, staying four nights in Ravello and one in Ana Capri - is it a nightmare driving round there then? Heard some scary stories about other drivers, mopeds etc. - should we be getting boats from Amalfi/Sorrento instead of using the roads? I had an idea to drive straight over to Pompeii from Ravello rather than go via Salerno, road looks wicked. Avoid?

Re: Sorrento/Capri
A really good restaurant in Sorrento is Il Buco. This is high end, either has or used to have a Michelin star. The trattoria that Eddie B mentioned is excellent. Stick to recommendations because some of them are properly shite, Sorrento is pretty touristy. If you fancy a pint there's both an Irish and an English pub at the top of the main street.

The bus to Positano and Amalfi takes hours, literally, and is one fucking hair raising experience if you don't like heights. A much better option is the ferry, although you can do one on the way out one back I guess. Positano is beautiful, Ravello also. Amalfi is further down the coast and in my opinion not as nice as those two, but the Amalfi Coast itself is simply beautiful. Capri is lovely but gets absolutely mobbed, although you're going at a good time.

Pompeii gets boiling hot, take drinks. Be careful of pickpockets and general gypos around Pompeii, although inside the ruins themselves it's ok.

By the way, if you're flying into Naples make sure you know where you are going if you go out in the city. Most of it centrally is fine, but there are areas to avoid. Once again the ferry terminals to Sorrento are pikey mecca, so keep bags etc. close.
